This 2014 report from Ponemon Institute is the third annual study of Australian companies, sponsored by HP Enterprise Security. The research is based upon a sample of 30 organisations across industries.

The mean annualised cost of cyber crimes is $4.3M per year, with a range from $409,959 to $15.8M. Smaller organizations incur a significantly higher per capita cost than larger organizations ($755 versus $282). Companies in energy and utilities, financial services, and other services experience substantially higher cyber crime costs.

Every year denial of services, web-based attacks, and malicious insiders account for more than 50% of all cyber crime costs. The average time to resolve a cyber attack was 23 days, with an average cost of $276,323. Activities relating to IT security in the network layer receive the highest budget allocation of up to 31%. Companies that deployed security intelligence systems including SIEM had an average cost savings of $1.9M and an ROI of 23%.
